Big move, JD.com: Pay five insurances and one housing fund for delivery riders! Meituan also announced: it will pay social security for food delivery riders! Delivery overtime penalties will be lifted across the board
Today, Meituan’s official official account issued a document stating that in order to actively build harmonious labor relations, Meituan has conscientiously implemented the protection of riders’ rights and interests and continued to promote riders’ social security work according to the characteristics of new employment forms and the actual needs of new employment groups. Since July 2022, under the guidance of the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security, Meituan has taken the lead in launching a pilot project for occupational injury protection for new employment forms, and has invested 1.4 billion yuan to pay occupational injury premiums for all riders in seven pilot provinces and cities, and will further cover all riders in all provinces and cities in the future. Since last year, Meituan has done careful research on social security programs such as riders’ payment of pension insurance, selected different cities in different regions to conduct in-depth research, and formed a preliminary pilot program under the guidance of relevant departments, and is currently building an information system related to riders’ social security, which is expected to be implemented in the second quarter of 2025, and gradually pay social security for full-time and stable part-time riders.
In addition, the article also mentioned that in 2025, Meituan will fully cancel the overtime fine for delivery, implement “anti-fatigue” measures, accelerate the construction of “rider-friendly communities” and other friendly scenarios in all fields, and give full play to the caring role of the labor union, so that more food delivery riders can feel warmth and care.
According to the sample regional survey released by Meituan, from January to October 2024, the overall overtime rate of Meituan’s takeout is 0.75%. The overtime rate of new riders within 30 days of joining the company is nearly 5 times that of veteran riders who have been employed for more than 1 year. New riders are more likely to overtime their orders due to unfamiliarity with the delivery environment and unskilled delivery skills. In addition, weather, road conditions, and even elevator anomalies can cause riders to overtime.
On February 11, JD.com announced the official launch of JD Takeaway, dropping a depth bomb on the local life track. On the same day, JD Takeaway officially launched the recruitment of “Quality Dine-in Catering Merchants”, and merchants who settled before May 1, 2025 can enjoy commission-free throughout the year.

It is worth noting that on February 19, JD announced that from March 1, JD will gradually pay five insurances and one housing fund for JD full-time delivery riders, and provide accident insurance and health and medical insurance for part-time riders.
After paying five insurances and one housing fund to the courier brother, JD.com also became the first platform to pay five insurances and one housing fund for food delivery riders. It is reported that couriers who retire in Jingdong Logistics can receive a pension and live a secure retirement life.
“(Let the delivery riders) have support for the elderly, medical treatment for illness, and compensation for injuries.” The relevant person in charge of Jingdong said that he is willing to work with all sectors of society to promote and continuously improve the protection of the rights and interests of food delivery riders.

During the Mid-Autumn Festival last year, Meituan CEO Wang Xing issued an all-staff letter internally, mentioning that more than 5,000 fresh graduates have been recruited every year in the past three years, and 6,000 are planned to be recruited for the class of 2025, and at the same time, the internal promotion rate is as high as 69%, providing more promotion opportunities for outstanding employees. In addition, in 2023, about 7.45 million riders will earn income on the Meituan platform, and they will be paid more than 80 billion yuan.
According to the statistics of high-frequency rider income in high-tier cities such as Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Shenzhen, the average monthly income of high-frequency riders is 7,629 yuan to 10,865 yuan.
The so-called high-frequency riders refer to riders who receive orders for 22 days or more in the month and have an average daily order time of 6 hours or more, which can be understood as a relatively stable source of income for food delivery.
According to data disclosed by the Meituan Research Institute in September last year, about 48% of riders on the platform who have received orders for less than 30 days a year, and about 11% of the riders who receive orders for more than 260 days a year. Based on this estimate, this means that out of 7.45 million riders, about 820,000 meet the definition of a high-frequency rider. The proportion is limited.
It is worth noting that after participating in the symposium of private enterprises held on February 17, Wang Xing, founder, chairman and CEO of Meituan, told the media that Meituan will actively embrace new technologies such as artificial intelligence and big data, continue to actively promote the expansion of consumption, explore innovative research and development such as drone delivery and automatic delivery, and strive to “go global” to expand overseas markets and constantly create a new situation for development.
