Thailand’s Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha said on the 19th that about 7,000 people rescued from illegal “call centers” in Myanmar are waiting to be transferred to Thailand. She said that the Thai government is taking prompt actions to solve this problem.
Recently, several Southeast Asian countries including Myanmar, Thailand, Laos and Malaysia have taken a series of measures such as power and internet cuts, and strengthening legislation and law enforcement to crack down on cross-border criminal activities such as telecom fraud and online gambling.
Many countries have indicated that they will continue to enhance cooperation within ASEAN and with China and other countries, and intensify joint crackdowns on criminal gangs.
The Bangkok Post of Thailand reported on the 17th that in the past three weeks, the Myanmar military has carried out a clearance operation in the areas of Mawyaute and elsewhere, aiming to gradually expel about 10,000 foreign personnel from the telecommunications fraud centers in those areas in stages.

According to previous reports, on February 17th, the Myanmar side arrested 273 foreign nationals who illegally entered the country at the Mawya Thaik Electrical Fraud Park. The Myanmar side has conducted identity verification and control detention for the relevant individuals and will further conduct in-depth investigations on them.
From January 30th to February 17th, the Myanmar side detained a total of 1,303 foreign nationals who illegally entered the country. Most of them were involved in illegal activities such as online fraud and online gambling.
At present, senior officials and representatives from Myanmar, China and Thailand are conducting operations in the Mawyaute region to combat criminal activities of online fraud and gambling. They are also jointly discussing and coordinating to expel illegal foreign entrants who have entered the country illegally to their home countries as soon as possible in accordance with the law.

At the regular press conference of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on February 17th, when answering questions related to the handling of serious cases of online gambling and telecom fraud, Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Guo Jia-kun stated that China is actively conducting bilateral and multilateral cooperation with countries such as Thailand and Myanmar, taking comprehensive measures to address both symptoms and root causes, jointly blocking the criminal elements’ roaming crimes in relevant countries, and jointly eradicating the cancerous tumors of online gambling and telecom fraud, in order to safeguard the safety and legitimate rights and interests of Chinese citizens overseas.
