Micron introduces the first PCIe Gen5 NVMe civilian-grade SSD

Micron Technology today announced the Micron 4600 PCIe Gen 5 NVMe SSD, an innovative client storage drive for OEMs for gamers, creators, and professionals. Powered by Micron’s G9 TLC NAND, the 4600 SSD is Micron’s first Gen 5 client SSD that doubles the performance of the previous generation.

The Micron 4600 SSD has a sequential read speed of 14.5 GB/s and a write speed of 12.0 GB/s. These features enable users to load large language models (LLMs) from SSDs to DRAM in less than a second, enhancing the user experience when using AI PCs. When it comes to AI model load times, the 4600 SSD delivers up to 62% faster load times compared to Gen 4 high-performance SSDs, ensuring rapid deployment of LLMs and other AI workloads.

In addition, the 4600 SSD delivers a 107% improvement in energy efficiency (MB/s per watt) compared to PCIEe Gen 4 products, resulting in longer battery life and improved overall system effectiveness.

The 4600 SSD is the second Micron civilian SSD to feature the most advanced Micron G9 NAND technology after the Micron 2650 NVIDIA, and the 4600 SSD is the second Micron client SSD to feature the most advanced Micron G9 NAND technology, following the Micron 2650 NVMe SSD already in production.

Building on previous ultra-secure features such as TCG Opal, signed firmware, and secure boot, the 4600 SSD includes the latest advanced security features such as Security Protocol and Data Model (SPDM), Data Object Exchange (DOE), and Device Identity Compliance Engine (DICE) to help provide user data protection.

The Micron 4600 NVMe SSD is sampling now for OEMs worldwide.
