Leisurely everything, eating is the greatest. The No. 1 Central Document of 2025 released on the 23rd makes a series of important deployments around “rice bags”, “vegetable baskets” and “oil bottles”. This once again shows that it is necessary to ensure national food security and always keep the rice bowl firmly in our hands.

It should be noted that on the basis of stabilizing at more than 1.3 trillion catties for 9 consecutive years, China’s grain output will reach a new level of 1.4 trillion catties for the first time in 2024. It should also be noted that the pattern of China’s grain supply and demand being in a tight balance for a long time has not changed. Affected by climate, water resources, external environmental changes and other factors, the challenges and risks that threaten China’s food security still exist. Moreover, it is difficult for grain output to climb and easy to slip, so we cannot take it lightly because of continuous bumper harvests.
Cultivated land is the lifeblood of grain production, and the strictest system of cultivated land protection must be implemented. “Strict control of the total amount of cultivated land and ‘use of supplementary land to determine occupation'”, “improve the quality evaluation and acceptance standards of supplementary cultivated land”, “continue to rectify the problems of ‘big sheds’, encroachment on cultivated land, ‘digging lakes and landscaping’, and indiscriminate occupation of cultivated land to build houses”…… The No. 1 document of the central government is targeted and accurate, and puts forward a series of targeted deployments to strengthen the protection of cultivated land and improve the quality of cultivated land.
While stabilizing the area, it is necessary to strengthen the support of agricultural technology and equipment, and make greater efforts to promote the increase of grain yield in a large area. In 2024, China’s grain yield per mu will increase by 5.1 kilograms, and the contribution rate to the increase in production will reach 80%. What does the increase in yield per mu depend on? Specifically, it is necessary to promote the joint efforts of good seeds, good opportunities, and good laws. In accordance with the requirements of the central government and the deployment of documents, we should speed up the cultivation and application of improved varieties, promote the intelligent application of agricultural machinery and equipment, increase investment in research and development, encourage industry-university-research cooperation, train agricultural professionals, and plug in the wings of science and technology to improve yields, so that high-standard farmland becomes high-yield farmland.
To ensure food security, it is also necessary to further improve the system of policies to support grain production. All parties should bow down to the game, form a joint force, further strengthen the support of strengthening agriculture and benefiting farmers, protect farmers’ enthusiasm for growing grain, improve the accuracy and direction of subsidies, and improve the inter-provincial horizontal interest compensation mechanism of grain production and marketing areas under the overall planning of the central government, so that the main producing areas can grasp grain benefits and not suffer losses, and better build a food security pattern in which jobs are served together and responsibilities are shouldered together.
Only by taking the initiative in food security can we stabilize the initiative in the rejuvenation of a strong country and provide a reliable guarantee for Chinese-style modernization. (ENDS)
