It is reported that Mr. Chen, an 80-year-old man, had been suffering from persistent dull pain in his teeth for a long time, which affected his normal eating. Therefore, he went to the dental hospital for treatment.
However, after having 9 teeth extracted at once, Mr. Chan was rushed to the ICU for emergency treatment due to sudden breathing difficulties, which almost endangered his life.
It is understood that Mr. Chen had 8-9 teeth in his upper jaw extracted after local anesthesia, and he developed symptoms such as laryngeal discomfort, dyspnea and urinary incontinence after the operation. The doctor said that if he was taken to the hospital two minutes later, his life would be lost.
Mr. Chan originally planned to have 10 teeth (9 in the upper jaw and 1 in the lower jaw) and 12 teeth implanted on the same day, at a total cost of $32,000.
At present, the staff of the Huangpu District Health Commission in Shanghai said that they have received complaints from Mr. Chen’s family.
A dental practitioner pointed out that it is generally recommended in the industry to have no more than two teeth extracted at a time, and it is extremely rare to have 9 teeth extracted from the upper jaw at one time.
In older patients, blood pressure and blood glucose levels should be critically assessed before tooth extraction. If your blood sugar is not well controlled, it can cause bleeding to stop after a tooth extraction. In addition, older people with weaker coagulation function, especially if platelets are low, may have a high risk of wound bleeding during nighttime sleep. Therefore, it is generally recommended that tooth extractions are not performed after 3 p.m.
Experts also emphasize that if the patient has inflammation (such as toothache), anti-inflammatory therapy should be given first, and tooth extraction should be considered after the inflammation has subsided. Tooth extraction during a toothache can lead to serious complications such as facial paralysis due to the connection between the tooth nerve and the facial nerve.
This incident reminds the public, especially elderly patients, that tooth extraction surgery should be cautious, and a comprehensive evaluation should be conducted before surgery, and a formal medical institution should be selected for operation to ensure safety.
