Recently, the relevant departments in Hong Kong have followed up the cases of Hong Kong people who are suspected of being lured to Southeast Asian countries for help, which has aroused concern.


On January 18, it was learned from the news website of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region that in view of recent developments, the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government has recently raised the outbound travel alert level for southeast Myanmar to red. Previously, a number of Hong Kong people were detained in Myanmar and Cambodia, and they were arrested through Bangkok, Thailand, on the false belief that they were recruiting workers or carrying goods.

On January 17, the Hong Kong SAR government announced that since the second quarter of 2024, there are signs of a resurgence of Hong Kong people suspected of being lured to Southeast Asian countries to be imprisoned and engaged in illegal work. In view of the recent developments, the government raised the outbound travel alert level for southeast Myanmar to red on the same day, while the rest of Myanmar maintained a yellow outbound travel alert.

Hong Kong people planning to travel to southeast Myanmar, including Myawaddy, Pabun, Phan and Gogli counties, should adjust their travel and avoid non-essential travel, the HKSAR government said. Hong Kong people in the area should pay attention to the situation, be vigilant and pay attention to safety.

The Security Bureau of the Hong Kong SAR Government has updated the Travel Alert website with additional information on Cambodia to remind the public to be vigilant against overseas work fraud.

In addition, according to the official website of the Security Bureau of the Hong Kong SAR Government, at present, Hong Kong’s travel warning for Thailand is a yellow warning, that is, there are signs of threats, you need to pay attention to the situation and be vigilant. On the 17th, Secretary for Security of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government Tang Bing-keung said that at present, there is no intention to raise the travel alert for Thailand, but it will be reviewed in due course according to the situation.

The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government’s deputy Secretary for Security Cheuk Hsiao Yip said on the 15th that 11 Hong Kong people were imprisoned in Myanmar, one in Cambodia, they are mistakenly believed to recruit workers or so-called purchasing activities, their own contact with the group, through Bangkok was arrested, none of the 12 people were arrested during the tour in Thailand. The Hong Kong authorities will continue to closely monitor the situation in Myanmar and Cambodia.

On the same day, the Hong Kong police revealed that they had arrested a Hong Kong woman suspected of luring two young Hong Kong women to a scam park in Myanmar. It is reported that the two cheated women met the suspect in a Hong Kong bar and were invited to travel to Thailand for free, saying that they could get rich rewards after assisting in the transport of Thai baht cash, and the two women were transferred to the Myanmar fraud park after they arrived in Thailand. It is reported that after the family paid the ransom, the two women have returned to Hong Kong.

A Hong Kong resident who had been trapped in a fraud park in Myanmar was rescued and safely returned to Hong Kong on the 16th after Hong Kong officials ended their trip to Thailand to follow up on the case of Hong Kong people trapped in Southeast Asia on the evening of the 14th. It is reported that the man was recruited as a delivery clerk on the social platform in 2024, and then cheated to a fraud park in Myanmar, where he was forced to cheat online, work 17 hours a day, and was beaten and reduced food portions due to multiple “performance” failures.
